Ymere Ontwikkeling asked O+A to perform an additional study for the prizewinning Europan 9 design ‘020-00’. The main objective of this study is to shed more light onto certain aspects of the design prior to the project reaching operational status.

The design ‘020-00’ served as the basis for this study. Based on questions posed by Ymere, research was performed into sun simulations, the phasing of the plan and subterranean building. The plan was quantified by pairing programme to floor space.

The study offered the opportunity to scrutinise and further develop the existing design. Where, at the Europan stage, the focus of attention lay in the urban composition and its public space, this study focussed further on the actual building blocks. Using sun simulations, section studies and the addition of a collective layer throughout the plan, six different block typologies were developed. Each housing block treats the combination of ‘working’ and ‘living’ differently. The superposition of these new developments leads to a broad spectrum of residential milieus. The transformation of the housing blocks has also enhanced the diversity of the public space.

The study was received enthusiastically by both the municipality and the client.
